Summary: A $1.2 million Defense University Research Instrumentation Program grant from the Department of Defense Office
A $1.2 million Defense University Research Instrumentation Program grant from the Department of Defense Office of Naval Research and Army Research Office.
Five UCF professors were awarded grants for equipment out of more than 700 proposals sent in by academic institutions nationwide, two of them immediately relevant to the field of virtual humans: Mingjie Lin, assistant professor in the department of electrical engineering and computer science, requested $201,500 for high-performance computer and robotic training equipment, and Gregory Welch, research professor in the Institute for Simulation and Training requested $281,400 for a physical-virtual human-robot interaction system;
“We are trying to break free from the monitor and bring some of it out of the screen physically in front of you,” said Welch, who is working on a “Sensorium” for a physical-virtual avatar. “Have human-shaped robots change their appearance, behavior and their shape in a way that allows them to be flexible.”
The research could yield a physical-virtual human, Welch said, that could move its arms and face and even give you a smile.

Summary: Soon we can expect tools to model #virtualhumans having #ai dialogues with us. This is a predecessor
Check out the video. Just one of the tools to model anatomical virtual humans. Soon, we’ll be able to have conversations with virtual humans, while ‘undressing’ them virtually, first by taking of their cloths, which is obviously hilarious on its own, but then also remove their skin, and strip their organs. We only need to turn off the ‘pain’ emotion, because else the virtual human would respond like a human who is scalped…

Summary: Ford uses Digital Child model in virtual crash-test dummies
Crash-test dummies constitute humanoid test devices used in simulated vehicle collisions. For many years those anthropomorphic devices were physical dummies of adults and children. Now begins the era for dummies to become virtual. They are digitalized similarly to avatars, and biologically modelled as any virtual physiological human.

Summary: Chatbots.org presents virtual humans technology as it stands
The virtual humans industry is growing very fast, as predicted the futurist Erwin van Lun and independent research companies such as Gartner or CCM Benchmark. Nevertheless, many advanced research projects, 3D human design methods or modeling techniques are not commonly known. Therefore, we would like to present three extraordinary state of the art examples of humanlike conversational artificial intelligence. They are expected to be adopted soon by the virtual humans industry.

Summary: Virtual humans being interviewed by mental health clinicians
Conversational virtual humans are nowadays applied to the field of neuroscience, psychiatry and psychology. The technology has evolved to a point where researchers may begin developing mental health applications that make use of virtual reality patients. Human patients with acute neurological illnesses are often confused and unable to cooperate with clinicians during medical consultations. Imagine a simulated training with virtual humans having real mental disorders, willing to talk to their doctors, and sharing their emotions!
