Experience a foreign or distant world without actually being there: Japanese researchers leaded by professor Susumu Tachi at Tachi Laboratory have developed Telesar V Robot Avatar which delivers a remote experience straight to its operator by transmitting sight, sound and touch data. You can actually feel the shape and surface unevenness, and also the temperature of objects.
This robot uses a series of sensors and a 3D head-mounted display, has 17 degrees of freedom in the body, 8 in the head and 7 in the arm joints (which is the same as a human). The hands have 15 degrees of freedom, which is a good amount less than the roughly 30 degrees of freedom a normal human hand has.
This technology may well be used for medical purposes (distant surgery), space exploration or disarming bombs as with this system you will have hands that you can move just as your own.
