Virtual human Spike has its own beliefs and values. Additionally, it exhibits rude, pessimistic and confrontational behavior. Even a very cheerful person is not able to convince this virtual agent to chill out, relax or assimilate optimistic outlook. Would you like that Spike became your conversational friend?
Multimodal interactive dialogue system Spike was built within the SEMAINE project. It uses a Sensitive Artificial Listener technique which is designed to capture a broad spectrum of emotional states. It focuses on “soft skills” that humans naturally use to keep a conversation alive, such as raising eyebrows, making pauses in the conversation or nodding.
Virtual human Spike aims to make people angry. It provokes exchanges that are quite highly coloured emotionally. Nevertheless, Spike pays attention to the user’s non-verbal behaviour, and reacts accordingly. Depending on the user’s state, Spike pursues various ways to engage the user in a simple but affective and confrontational dialogue. It uses non-verbal interaction, emotional perception, and social behaviour capabilities to continue the conversation until the user finishes it.
