Highly expressive avatars presented on the video are used by Vcom3D in teaching Arabic as well as culturally appropriate gestures and behaviors useful when interacting with people from Arabic countries. Developed in cooperation with Advanced Distributed Learning Co-Laboratory for military and civilian personnel working in Iraq and Afghanistan, 3D Serious Game constitutes dynamic learning environment with embodied conversational agents that feature voice, text and gestural information.
Avatars used in cross-cultural training exhibit cultural, emotional and neurophysiological behaviors. Learners communicate with them while performing various linguistic and socio-cultural tasks. Avatars’ body movements are blended with muscle-based facial expressions, their speech exhibits accurate lip-synchronization, and hands articulate gesturing and grasping.
The subject of socio-cultural context of conversational agents is widely discussed by researchers in many papers such as Cross-Cultural Study of Expressive Avatars, Life-like Agents: Cross-Cultural Study or Transcultural Believability in Embodied Agents.
