Virtual agents’ reasoning and actions are tightly connected with their awareness ability helping to relate to the environment during a conversation. Researchers invented the combination of virtual reality and artificial intelligence techniques to simulate living conversational agents being aware of themselves, the virtual world around them, and other virtual beings existing in that environment.
Awareness ability of such conversational agents consists of three components: environment awareness, self-awareness and interaction awareness. Researchers from University of Technology Sydney and University of Western Sydney were able to implement those components into virtual humans’ artificial minds. The method developed by them enables virtual agents to reason about their environment. Those virtual agents understand the interaction capabilities of other participants, their goals and current state of the surrounding virtual environment. Additionally, conversational agents include these elements in dialogues leaded with other virtual creatures.
