Created in 2010 by NAACL Executive Board, Emerging Regions Fund is intended to assist the creation of a larger and more cohesive Computational Linguistics community in Latin America, and to enhance more regional interactions among students and researchers anywhere in the Americas.
NAACL has set aside a total of $5,000 fro Emerging Regions Fund in funding for the year 2011, and invites proposals in the range of $500-$1,500 (US). There will be two deadlines for proposals, and approximately half of the funds will be awarded after each deadline. NAACL recognizes that each region has specific needs and concerns, and so we are open to a wide range of possible proposals, subject to the constraint that these awards are intended to support individuals, institutions, or events located in the Americas, and to support travel within the Americas. NAACL will not support travel to or from locations outside of the Americas, and in general travel should be limited to a specific region in the Americas.
The deadline for proposals is March 1, 2011, for events to take place between May 2011 and Jan 2012. Proposals will be evaluated by a committee consisting of members of the NAACL Executive Board.
Examples of proposals that might help to build community could include financial support for regional conferences or workshops, or providing financial or material support for Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics classes at colleges and universities in Latin America. In addition, NAACL has a long tradition of supporting student participation in conferences, summer schools, and NLP/CL competitions, and would give high priority to such efforts
in Latin America or at regional events in the Americas. Note that this fund is not intended to support student travel to the NAACL HLT conference, as there is a separate fund available for the purpose.
Please submit a one-page proposal that addresses the
following points:
- What will this funding enable you to achieve?
- Who specifically will benefit from this funding?
- The total amount of NAACL funding requested (in US dollars)
- A more detailed breakdown of the budget (if relevant)
- If you will use this funding to make your own awards (e.g., student travel grants), by what criteria will you do that, and who would make that decision?
- Contact information for the individual or organization making the request, along with any relevant web pages
Please submit proposals or questions to Rebecca Hwa, Chair of NAACL (rebecca.hwa at gmail.com) and David Chiang (chiang at isi.edu)
