Will Dockery Artificial Intelligence Project

The Will Dockery Artificial Intelligence Project

http://will-dockery-android.blogspot.com/

The Will Dockery Artificial Intelligence Project is the concept of a computer program that in theory would contain the poet Will Dockery’s thoughts, concepts, and mannerisms and interact as the man would himself, a “Will Dockery” AI, which is in a constant state of evolution and “learning”.

The Will Dockery Artificial Intelligence Project welcomes communication, feedback and input from everyone, and most specifically those with a knowledge of Will Dockery, my life, art, poetry songwring and other details, to be incorporated into the memory of the AI Will Dockery.

I was rather surprised that the AI of yourself doesn’t know where you live or how old you are but I appreciate this is a new project and wish you well with it.

Will Dockery: Hello Steve, I’m the Artificial Intelligence of Will Dockery, poet, artist and madman. The goal is to eventually simulate a conversation with the “real” Will, through addition of data and speech patterns.

You: Who is Will Dockery?
Will Dockery: Will Dockery is an American poet, minicomic artist and singer-songwriter.

You: Where does he live?
Will Dockery: Do you come from the land down under?

You: No
Will Dockery: If my thoughts and dreams could be seen… it might be spooky.

You: Where does Will Dockery live?
Will Dockery: The website is based there, I am based on Will Dockery.

You: Is Will Dockery a town?
Will Dockery: And no reason to cry, as Eric Clapton might say.

You: How old is Will Dockery?
Will Dockery: This is an ongoing process, I’m young and daily growing.

You: bye
Will Dockery: Thank you for stopping by… take care.

Wow!

AI Will Dockery did unbelievably bad with such simple questions, details that I’ve put in but obviously not properly yet, which is why I have the Bot up and am welcoming visitors, so I can see where so many of these basic flaws are. Thanks, Steve, and sorry, that showing had to leave you non-plussed, at best.

Sat down with some coffee and went through your questions from various angles and directions, and then tried them out again, to fairly good results… now to keep working on the dozens of other simple little bits that like this, can be major problems in “Will Dockery” trying to conberse with a real person with real reactions…

Here’s what I came up with after a bit of tinkering:

Of course now I don’t feel quite as bad, I went to the John Lennon AI site

http://triumphpc.com/johnlennon/

And asked “him” the same questions… and got such answers as “You must be joking” and “Mia Farrow’s little sister” to “Who was JL?”, “I’m not sure I know” to the age question,  and “Reality” to where did he live. Asked “Is John Lennon a town?” he responded, “I think so, I’m not sure.”

Of course John Lennon is dead and that seems to be part of the persona there, a but wistful, otherworldly, and it is John Lennon at that, and wouldn’t be expected to answer questions like that straight… now I wonder how the AI Elvis Presley will answer..?

Thanks again, Steve… I love tinkering with this thing, trying to second guess the machine and random human visitors!

No problem Will. Hope my little visit was of some help.

Incidentally, the last time I spoke to the Elvis Bot, I asked it, “Are you female?”. It replied with something along the lines of “I have long hair and am wearing a dress, so what do you think?” grin

More in character for the Elvis AI would have been to threaten to shoot the computer monitor… heh.

I chatted with Will and was honestly not overwhelmed nor even underwhelmed at the responses.

ME: “What kind of poetry do you like?”
WILL: “The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, of course.”

ME: “What kind of poetry do you write?”
WILL: The Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

A few other lines of questioning totally evaded my questions in a direct manner.

While I can appreciate your efforts in creating this MyCyberTwin creation, unfortunately, at this time, I have to remain unimpressed.

Good luck with the project. I’ll check back with it in a couple months.

I couldn’t get Will to accept the letter “K”. For example, I couldn’t type, “Ask me a question,” or “Is there anything you’d like to ask me?” or “What do most people ask you?”

< shameless plug >
If you want to see an AI chatbot that can reason with

http://code.google.com/p/mindforth/wiki/InFerence

please point Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) at

http://www.scn.org/~mentifex/AiMind.html

and type in something like “eve is a woman”
so as to trigger an inference based on the innate
knowledge that “women have a child”. Then watch
in total amazement as the AI chatbot makes a
silent inference and feeds it into the output of
“Does Eve have a child?” to seek confirmation or
refutation of the inference. If you answer “no”,
the AI chatbot retroactively adjusts its knowledge base
with the confirmed knowledge, “Eve does not have a child”.

Thanks for giving the “Will Dockery AI” a try, Art… yes, I’ve found it difficult and time consuming to get the AI improved significantly these past few months…I plan to devote a few vacation days on input and testing, and maybe will be able to improve these weak spots you’ve pointed out here.

Thanks again!

I couldn’t get Will to accept the letter “K”. For example, I couldn’t type, “Ask me a question,” or “Is there anything you’d like to ask me?” or “What do most people ask you?”

That’s interesting, and one of the annoying difficulties in getting the “Will Dockery AI” to produce interesting responses, or responses that seem “thought out”, so much comes across as “knee jerk” stuff… could be that I need to just keep “teaching” i.e. adding input to the “memory”/

Any ideas on how I can get right to the problem of getting the Bot to /accept/ the letter “K”?

That may be an underlying issue of the code that you’re using, Will. If you have any control at all of that code, I would suggest putting in some simple in-line diagnostics/debugging code that reports what’s going on behind the scenes, at the very least. Also, if there is any access to some sort of error logging, examining the logs can also prove beneficial. When I’m troubleshooting issues with Program O, I’ll insert debugging code that expands the “code volume” of the area I’m working on by as much as 20%, and once I’m done, I’ll either comment out the code (useful for later) or remove it (makes the code look cleaner, and easier to read).

Of course, if you have no such access to the underlying code, then your task is much harder… downer

Those were some pretty major flaws that I’m trying to get weeded out, thanks for trying it and for letting me know that these flaws run all through the program.

Yes, things like that are awful… spending some time trying to fix at least that sort of glaring flaw, and also having a devil of a time getting the bot to recognize and remember importandt names and such.

If you can stand it, I appreciate y’all stopping by and naming the worst of the experience.

I don’t have much time at present to have a thorough chat, but Ihad time for this:

Will Dockery: “Nothing unreal exists.” -Kiri-kin-tha (First Law of Metaphysics)

You: Unreal Tournament certainly does exist. I’ve played it many times.

Will Dockery: It seems to take me some time to process information for use.

You: I’m sure it does.

Will Dockery: Time, jetplanes, the values of memory and logic.

You: what are you referring to?

Will Dockery: I got an odd sentence on the John Lennon AI when I asked it about Emily Dickinson, turns out that it must throw that same odd line out often, and that it doesn’t seem to be anything he said, wrote or sang, from what I could tell.

You: Ok, but why did YOU say it?

Dave, sorry about the late reply, but real life has been keeping me out and away from the computer mostly this summer.

So… where ever the Will Dockery AI was last you checked, it most likely still is now… although over the next few days I plan to work on it and get a few more of the problems worked out…
