Robby!

No explanation, just like that?  I reckon that was an extremely valuable mailing list; it’s just that the real players were not necessarily the talkers.  So what happens next?

:-(

{PS Did I really send the LAST message to the Robitron list?}

That would be a shame Robby. As Marcus says, why?

The Yahoo interface sucks. The list was 12 years old and though it said there were over 500 subscribers, many of the subscribers’ emails were bouncing - but could not address that problem very well, again due to the Yahoo admin interface.

Tom, I only reclaimed ownership of the list a few months back, so I didn’t ban you from anything.

Marcus, I’m sorry for your loss. Maybe Erwin’s thing here will thrive or somebody will start a better list. There are better email interfaces out there.

A discussion list has discussions on it, and Robitron had become mostly a place to announce things, and it’s heyday was over 10 years ago. Time to move on.

Gotta lotta mouths to feed. Gotta bring home the bacon.

Best,

Robby.

The Fall of the Robitron Empire, which lasted 12 years, is a massive blow for the chatbot community.

Sigh… I’ve moved my 2011 blog post (My own posts to the Robitron group since 2008) to the new webpage above, in commemoration of my own contributions to the Robitron list.

Tom and I are starting a new Robitron Discussion Group at http://www.robitron.com

I know, I should have emailed the old list before starting another one, but this is a fresh start.

Cheers,

Robby.

I would definitely email the old list Robby as most of them don’t visit here and won’t see your announcement.

Hi Steve,

I’m not in any hurry to build back the exact same members from the mailing list. Yahoo did not associate names with the email list, so I felt that a mass mailing to them would be like spamming a bunch of people who had stopped using the list already.

Tom and I have joined forces for this discussion board, and I think it’s going to work out fine without all the emails.

I’m making no attempt to duplicate the old list, or to make alternatives to chatbots.org.  You might see some of the same topics, but I think “Robitron” is a less technical, more small talk, off topic kind of board that should be interesting to read as more people discover it.  It is the first time I’ve used the robitron.com domain for this kind of thing, but I expect people to find it through google and the normal traffic to The Turing hub and other corners of the Internet.

That thread from the forum launch is a good resource, to see from the initial planning, what worked and what didn’t work.

Tom, look at the date on that thread. Anything there is completely out of context now. It doesn’t tell what any problems were.
