sorry for all the newbie questions, but I’m just having a lot of issues getting ChatScript to run in a repeatable, sane manner for simple cases, and spending lots of time in WTF mode.

I ask Antonette for her variables

Antonette:
randomuser: :variables
Antonette:  variable: $randindex = 1369
  variable: $bot = Antonette
  variable: $login = randomuser

What are the exact nature of the issues?  You say that Chatscript does not run in a repeatable manner?  The nature of the programming is such that Chatscript is designed not to repeat responses, etc.  The way that the topics are selected and which control script you are using all play into how “repeatable” the responses are. 

Perhaps you can post one of the simple cases?  99% of the time I find I have made a syntax error.  1% of the time I try something complicated and my pain is self inflicted.  95% of the time the answer is somewhere in one of the documents, but why spend hours looking when you can post the question here?
