Just a few minutes ago, Chuck Bolin posted in the “New Bees Posting Policy” thread. I felt that it would be much better if it were in it’s own thread, so I created a thread called, “The Prodigal Returns”, and moved it there. I then deleted the placeholder post, thinking that it would only delete that particular post. Instead, it deleted the entire thread. I doubt that there’s anything that can be done to recover it, unless by some miracle a site backup just happened to catch a 13 minute old post before I deleted it.
Also, while trying to do what I could to “fix” the problem I caused, I tried to pull up Chuck’s member page, so that I could send him an email. All I got, though, was a 404 page. I tried several times, and I tried a couple of other members, as well (Jan’s, CR’s, etc.), all with the same results.

Here’s some followup data, regarding the actual bug I’ve reported:
In the individual threads, the links to member pages that sit under a member’s avatar are correct, and look like this:
http://www.chatbots.org/expert/chuck_bolin/802
In the search pages, the links for the author of the threads themselves are incorrect, and look like this:
http://www.chatbots.org/ai_zone/member/802/
This is why I wasn’t able to get to the member pages I was looking for. Thought you might like to know.

Two more questions:
1. Did you press ‘delete’ on the topic? So on the first post in the thread? We could clarify that by renaming it to ‘delete thread’.
2. Which thread did you delete? We probably have a backup.

To the best of my knowledge, Erwin:
1.) I was certain (at the time) that I had only seen one “delete” button, but now I’m not so sure. :(
2.) It was a thread that I had created just to move Chuck’s post into it. I’ll look and see if I have the URL in my email.

2. You can simply select postings and move them to another thread using ‘split’ or ‘move’. Which one did you use?

I used the “move” button on the post itself, rather than the “split” button for the thread. Also, since the post I was trying to delete was the first for the thread, I used that “delete” button, thinking it was for deleting only the post. This is where I made my mistake, I’m afraid. If possible, it may be a good idea to alter that button to say “Delete Thread”, if that is what it’s function is.

Dave, the delete button of the first post in a thread now says “Delete Thread”.

Thanks, Arthur(?)!
While we’re on the subject of moving posts, even if it’s just a single post, would it be better to use the “split” button on the first post, rather than the “move” button on the post itself? Of all the forums that I’ve administered or moderated before, this has the least intuitive of all of the interfaces I’ve used. That’s not a complaint, mind you. Just an observation.

We’ve had some issues with “Split”, so maybe “Move” is better. I am not sure ... I know my way around better in the back-end of the forum and have never had to do any moderating.
Erwin, what do you think?

Split is still fine with me, as that’s what is really happening.
If we press ‘split’ we can select posts in a thread, group them together and post as a new thread, with a new name, and new thread id. So I don’t see the issue with the terminology.
On this: Dave Morton - Feb 16, 2011: In the search pages, the links for the author of the threads themselves are incorrect, and look like this:
http://www.chatbots.org/ai_zone/member/802/
is still open. The member urls should be
/expert/<name>/member_id/
Arthur, would it be possible to have a look at this? Tx man!

This is now fixed.
